Victor Rios, Ph.D., an Associate Professor of Sociology at
the University of California, Santa Barbara, will present his research on
juvenile justice, masculinity, race, and crime. He has published widely in
these areas, including the 2011 book, Punished: Policing the Lives of Black and
Latino Boys (NYU Press). Based on three years of field research and in-depth
interviews with young men in Oakland, CA, Rios analyzed how juvenile crime
policies and criminalization affect the everyday lives of urban youth. Rios has
received numerous awards, including the 2010 New Scholar Award From American
Society of Criminology and the 2011 Harold J. Plous award at UCSB. His book
Punished received the 2012 Best Book Award, Latino/a Sociology Section,
presented by the American Sociological Association.
